Gun Safety
Addressing the threat of gun violence in homes, schools, and communities is extremely important to me. This commitment was recognized by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America when they named me a Distinguished Candidate.
Gun violence is a public health crisis. As a father of four and a public health professional, I have spent decades concerned about the rise in school shootings since Columbine. We also know that firearms are the primary means of suicide. In the State Assembly, I will make every effort to reduce the number of firearms in circulation. I am proud to have worked with the Dane County Boys and Girls Club and CEO Michael Johnson to remove over 500 guns from Madison streets through their gun buyback event.
I will support legislation to implement red flag/extreme risk protection order laws, to ban assault rifles and bump stocks, and require safe storage of firearms. I will also support state funding for public education and awareness about the increase in suicide risk when a gun is in the home.
There are plenty of steps the State Assembly can take to reduce senseless gun violence without violating 2nd Amendment rights. I promise to do all I can in the Assembly to pass these common sense gun safety measures.
